Abraham Lincoln The American Civil War - 1756 Words

Abraham Lincoln is often regarded as a resilient individual who triumphed over adversity during one of the most turbulent times in Unites States history: the American Civil War. Traits that are often attributed to him are honesty, charisma, a silver tongue, and a sense of equality. His virtues include†¦show more content†¦Without this much-needed drive and ambition, it is unlikely that Lincoln would have accomplished what he during his life. What truly sparked Lincoln’s ambition was the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This act created the states of Kansas and Nebraska and essentially repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 is what almost single handedly got Lincoln back into politics and pushed him to become a much bigger activist in the abolitionist movement. â€Å"But then there came in 1854 an event that would pull his antislavery convictions to the center of his politics and ‘arouse’ the universalism and egalitarianism, and the moral concept of the nation, that they rested upon† (Miller 230). Lincoln would go on to condemn the â€Å"monstrous injustice of slavery itself’, naming it as a â€Å"vast moral evil†. Lincoln felt that slavery threatened the basic human rights of all Americans: personal liberty, self-government, and the enjoyment of the fruits of one’s labor. One of Lincoln’s most shining examples of his ambition would be during the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Lincoln was aiming for the Senate seat that w as currently held by Stephen Douglas. Secondary research was the second hand information used. The use of both methods to gather data enabled me to gather adequate information and better understand the topic being researched. Limitations Limitations faced while conducting this research was availability of experts in editing and guidance was minimal. Support from friends or organisation website were not enough. Time management was also an issue where information was not retrieve in the appropriate time manner. A business management report is a formal statement of the results of a business, or of any matter on which definite information is required, made by some person or body. It may be presented orally or in written form. Industry experiences may support the development of an appropriate management report due to the fact that this is where situations are analysed, conclusions are drawn, alternatives considered and recommendations made. To write a management report you must first analyze the information that you are going to put in the report. You then arrange it so that the numbers can be evaluated easily. 2.1 Negotiate appropriate aims, objectives and targets for the work-based project task The aim of a project is the statement to the problem the project is set to solve. The aims may not necessarily be fully achieved by the project in itself, but the project should contribute to their achievement. Objectives are derived from the aim, but are more specific, offering concrete statements of what the project will try to achieve in order to reach its aim(s). Objectives should be matched to the problem determinants identified in the problem analysis, and should be written at a level which allows them to be evaluated at the conclusion of the project. A well-worded objective will therefore be SMART The target are the person who will positively be affected by the project. They must be distinguished from intermediaries, who are also reached by the project but do not benefit from it. Instead, they are familiar with the target group and are expected to support the implementation process. Aim To critically assess the needs of IT tool within organisations to contribute to performance and technical efficiency. Objectives To critically assess IT needs. The aims, objectives and targets and the ends in which an organization is hoping to achieve. By putting aims, objectives and targets in place the organization gives itself a purpose and a direction in which to head. A framework around which to create their plans is provided in the aims and objectives. With the overall plan the company can now set particular targets and monitor the development of achieving them. The aims and objectives are linked in the following way: Aims are the changes the company are trying to achieve. Objectives are the methods or the activities by which you achieve your aims. Once aims and objectives are clear, it will be easier to agree on planned outputs, outcomes and impact. The organisation set aims and objectives, so as to be able to measure their progress towards their stated goals for a particular financial term or business period. Aims indicate where the business wants to be in the future, whereas objectives set a clearly defined target for the business. In most businesses, plans are drawn up for the business to achieve these aims and targets. It also causes the business owners to remain focus. 3.1 Research suitable information to inform the work-based activity Work based activities is a concept put in place to design your organisation in such a way thatit supports work activities optimally rather than drawing a boundary. In other word no employee owns or is assigned to a set workstation. By working activity based, you condition your mind and body to get the most out of time and space and the good thing is, you get better at it every day. All work based activity spaces should have a fast wireless network, and in all, facilities are shared between coworkers and management, no one has their own desk, except for maybe the security staff. According to https://timemine.com.au your day is filled with tasks you need to do. All tasks require a typical attention from you that is not uniform. For some tasks you need to think creatively, for some youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll need to collaborate, and for others you simply need to do a couple of mundane chores. In your ABW space, you choose your desk, room or area according to the task that youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re about to do. The office environment is designed to support you in doing that particular task. Benefits of Activity Based Working you concentrate better you are more productive you are more active and less sedentary during your work day you are more likely to collaborate and share ideas and skills you are more mindful of your tasks, activities and productivity so you enjoy working more 3.3 Assess how the development of skills and behaviors improved own knowledge of working practices, making recommendations for improvement The development of skills and behaviors will improve own knowledge of working practices by ensuring: improve the outcome and experiences for those who use your services improve the flow of patients and information going through your department and the whole healthcare system reduce queues or waiting lists design systems to avoid mistakes improve the working environment for staff increase job satisfaction for yourself and others identify your own development needs as well as the needs of others build your individual competence and confidence develop excellent business cases when you do need extra resources understand and influence the culture you work in My recommendation is checking with your supervisor about the work you are expected to carry out and the standard you need to achieve, the safety points to be aware of and the skills and knowledge you will need to develop. 4.1 Develop conclusions to meet the aims, objectives and targets I have concluded that meetings can be the most interesting and productive part of meeting the aims, objectives and targets. The planning done in meetings plays a vital role in the completion of the above mentioned. These planning entails preparation, facilitation, inspiration and results. Preparation means you are making sure your meeting has a clear purpose and agenda. Preparation also means attention to details. Facilitation means that the correct persons are responsible for selected task. Inspiration mean motivating individuals or aiding someone in creating something. Results is when you meet your aims, objectives and targets. 4.2 Carry out appropriate changes to improve the collection, f ormatting,storage and dissemination of information Questions to consider: What current mechanisms are in place to reach out to your stakeholders? Which has proven to be the most effective means of communication? What is the clear message I want to convey? Who is the subject matter expert that will convey the agencyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s message? This is critical when the agency is addressing an issue that requires an expert analysis or interpretation of information derived from the information management system. Who is my target audience? 4.3 Implement a strategy to improve access to systems of information and knowledge. Knowledge is a dynamic combination of experience, expert insight, values and contextual information. It can be intangible, personal, elusive, and immeasurable (Gorelick, 2005).Knowledge constitutes a foundation for evaluating new experiences and information and is continually shaped through new experiences (Davenport Prusak, 1998). Knowledge has two very distinct aspects; the easily communicated and recorded or explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge which is embedded in the minds of individuals and is not so easily documented (Nanoka Takeuchi, 1995). Strategies to improve access to systems of information and knowledge: Developing and Information and Knowledge management System à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" this is an integral component of project management. Analyze information and knowledge needs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" to be effective in managing information as a resource, the IKM system must meet the need of all the stakeholders. the IKM system should be developed based on analysis of the information knowledge needs of donors, the project team, partner organizations, target populations and other institutions, including governmental and non-governmental organizations in the project area as well as the broader adaptation and development community. Design a system for information and knowledge management à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" information and knowledge management are crucial to the design of a project. IKM systems should be as simple as possible in order for it to be efficient. The IKM system must clearly define what data will be collected and by what methods. It must outline how data will be analyzed to generate the information needed by different stakeholders. Develop capacity for information and knowledge management In order for it to be effective, information and knowledge management must be the responsibility of all project staff, including partners. For this to work, the project team must understand the value of information and knowledge, and must be clear on their roles and responsibilities for managing this valuable resource. Findings Today, as customers increasingly turn to digital channels to research products, shop and purchase and as employees arrive in the workplace conditioned by engaging consumer Web, mobile and social experiences organizations cant afford to be left behind due to legacy investments. Armistice Day was the first national recognition and important step towards the care and honor of those who had served protecting the country. Years later in 1938, Congress passed the 11th of November as a legal holiday; in 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to include an honoring to all military personnel and committees (â€Å"Office of Public Affairs†). Military men used to be the â€Å"talk of the town,† everyon e wanted to know them and claim them in their lives, but nowadays people want to discard the disgruntled figures that come back from the hardships of war. The men and affects of war on them did not change, people’s tolerance for them did. No one wants to deal the mentally unstable or disabled used to be war heroes. They deserve the valor and honor that surrounded them when they shipped off to still be there when they finally come home. Caring for the Veteran’s when they come home begins with the military itself; these are there men coming home and it needs to stay as such. I believe in a motto of once a soldier, always a soldier, and that the military is something that should always be there for its members. When injured or outdated servicemen come home from their final assignment, they receive honorable discharge. There should be no â€Å"discharge† however; there should only be retirement from the field. It is very important to give first impression in a appropriate way; because most of the people try to guess the personality right from the first impression and they act according for e. g. Some people may give first impression very bad like dressing up, way of talking â€Å"remember that your perceived personality is also judged by your physical attributes and how you present yourself to the people. †(www. exforsys. com accessed on 28th Nov 09) but with the passage of time you may come to know that they have an opposite personality and they gradually change. Same way there are some people who give first good impression and you may like them in the early stages but later on they may change and have a opposite personality for. e. g. narrow minded,impernent,negative thinking, pessimistic. Despite of all that it is very important to give first impression in a good way and act accordingly throughout the time because it is very hard to change the first impression and you have to make the people think positive in optimistic way; because the first impression invites others to come closer to you and to know more about you. So before starting placement it is very important for you to give first good impression in order to create a good relationship with the staff; you can do this by preparing yourself in every way so you don’t give bad impression and you can do this by finding out about the setting so for that I choose these two explanations. What to wear *black sensible shoes *straight black trousers by finding out the dress code you will be able to show that how interested you are and also that you are aware of safety. Who is your supervisor? *what their job is *how to address them *how they teach the children *the dress code *name of the supervisor *what duties you’ll be expected to do. This show how reliable you are and will help people to talk openly with you and to trust you. That is why first impression is very important because people decide and make opinion about you in the first impression. So it is very important to give a nice first impression to win their hearts.

A devastating bomb pounded the entire surrounding area of Los Angeles. Churches, hospitals and streets were flooded with sick, dying, and even dead people. Hospitals that w ere built to only withstand 200 people now have thousands, and hospitals lack food, doctors, and water. Philip's struggle for survival, and the devastating blow against LA was only the beginning of the disastrous bomb. The setting is practically the whole plot of the novel showing Philip's struggle to get his mother to a burn center that could save her life, bring his family to safety, and to save his town from thirst. When Philip arrives at the hospital with his mom the government and hospital had already started flying patients to burn centers, but his mom was too sick and so badly burned that the hospital didn't care for her. She was placed on the bottom of list to be flown away. Philip secretly switches the tag on his mom with one that says and earlier number, so that she would be flown out more promptly. He does so and she is flown out early and he most probably saved her life by doing so. Another example was when the bomb had just struck and Philip's family was in the shelter, which wasn't very safe and stable. He went up to the surface to check out his neighbor's house which was miraculously intact. Philip found the owner and his wife in good shape and arranged to bring his family over to th e neighbor's cool basement for safety and refuge. A third example was when the hospital in his town was almost put of water and Philip was asked by a nurse to find a worker that works with the town' s plumbing at his house and manage to get water to the hospital. He did so and after a while drained water from a resident's pool and had it flown down to the hospital. After the Bomb is an exciting and stimulating novel which shows the leadership of a teenager over his family. The novel displays a realistic happening that can happen any second and describes

Emission Reduction Essay examples

Emission Reduction Essay examples Emission Reduction Essay examples | Emission Reduction | ECON220-1301A-06 | | Ashley Baker | 3/10/2013 | | The two policies that I chose that could be used to reduce the total amount of emissions are Cap and Trade, and a Carbon Tax. They both â€Å"create incentives for businesses and households to conserve energy, improve energy efficiency, and adopt clean-energy technologies† (Policy Basics, 2013). â€Å"The Cap and Trade policy specifies the amount of allowable emissions† (Policy Basics, 2013). â€Å"A Carbon Tax is the obverse of Cap and Trade: rather than fixing the amount of allowable emissions, it specifies their price† (Policy Basics, 2013). I believe that the Cap and Trade policy would work not only because it creates incentives for businesses and households, but it also gives you a certain amount that is allowed. I also think that a Carbon Tax would work because if you were to go over the price that was given you would be charged extra, and no one wants to pay more than what they use. A Carbon Tax also creates incentives for businesses and households. Ther e are many benefits for each of the policies, but I am going to share two for each of them because I feel that they are the most important ones. The two benefits for the Cap and Trade policy are that it â€Å"provides a cost-effective way for the U.S. to adjust to a more sustainable use of energy† (Earl, 2009), and that â€Å"it motivates other countries to join the emission reduction commitments† (Earl, 2009). The benefits of a Carbon Tax are that it â€Å"replaces command-and-control regulations and expensive subsidies with transparent and powerful market-based incentives† (Morris, 2013), and that it â€Å"promotes economic activity through reduced regulatory burden and lower marginal tax rates† (Morris, 2013). There will be no cost for either the Cap and Trade or a Carbon Tax. â€Å"Jim Sims says that the question of how much will it cost is absolutely imperative for policymakers to answer† (Carey, 2010). We think that everything has a cost but in reality not everything does, a policymaker cannot make you pay for one of their

Exercise Deprivation on Mood - Essay Example The tend to exercise more due to the guilt of overeating and when it helps in maintaining the body and also improves the mood, the habit would become habitual, which could turn fatal to the health of the individual. This type of behavior is found commonly among college goers who heavily depend on exercises to keep themselves fit and healthy and achieve a greater level of mood satisfaction. Apart from normal individuals, exercise plays a vital role in case of athletes who need to maintain a certain level of fitness to overcome the pressures of the game. However, there has not been much research that has focused on what impact will exercise dependence have in case of athletes. Thus the article provides a comparative study on the impact of exercise dependence and withdrawal on the mood changes in both athletes and non-athletes. In this correlational study 46 athlete and 34 non-athletes female participants were included. The athlete participants were not in-season players and were not attending any training at the time of the study and the sports in which they were engaged included basketball, football, swimming and diving. The non-athletes on the other hand exercised for two hours per week. The age, height, weight, demography and exercise dependence status of the participants using a exercise dependence scale were obtained.

Reading Film Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reading Film - Essay Example The film is a superb blend of sexuality and racial prejudice. The film captivates one of the brilliant performances by Juliana Moore. With a vulnerable emotion and strength of mind, she portrays the emotion of a housewife whose spouse has a covert gay life. It’s amazingly true that a movie like ‘Far From Heaven’ has that stylish finish along with tremendous emotional compulsion. This is a rare blend indeed and the greatest achievement with this particular film is the immaculate compatibility between the crew and the stars that make every moment of the movie artificial As well as deeply felt. (Indiana University, n.d.) In a film like ‘Far From Heaven’, the ambience of the narrative and the projection of the theme are never obvious. Yet, the film slowly enchants its spectators and one doesn’t need to wait for long to experience complete entwinement with the film. The film is extremely sensitive and far from being a mere domestic melodrama of Whittaker family, the movie is a strong portrayal of myriad social consideration that transports the film to a realm of difference from the ordinary movies of the same genre. Picking up a particular scene from the movie with so many emotionally exuberance is very difficult. Yet, the scene which forms the most sensitive and most climactic scene of the entire film demands a detailed description. The scene to be noted is where Cathy Whittaker, played by Julianne Moore finds her man Frank, played by Dennis Quaid, in the arms of his gay partner. Undoubtedly, Moore reaches the league of the contemporary actresses after this brilliant performance. The language of camera transcends any narrative incorporated in this scene and the feeling and the expression of Moore is equally mind-blowing. The cinematography, score implementation of light editing and sets make it a complete visual. The visual effect used at the backdrop of the scene makes it so compatible with the

Expectations within my job role Essay Example for Free

Expectations within my job role Essay As a professional worker within Clare Lodge I have many expectations within my job role. As a secure care home I am governed by several pieces of legislation that outline the rules, boundaries and policies that are provided for us by Peterborough City Council. These include the National Minimum Standards, these are the standards that the home as a whole are expected to be working to. Some of the things outlined in these standards are wishes and feelings of the child, equality and diversity, safeguarding, health and well being, contact, placement preparation and suitability to work with children. It is imperative and expected to work professionally in my job role and the children’s safety and care comes above anything else, even when looking after your colleagues, if someone is not behaving in a professional manner then it is the expectation of the employee to use policies provided to deal with it. The policy to be used would be in respect of â€Å"Whistle blowing†. As I am in a professional role I have my own rights as well. I have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity under the policies provided. I also have the right to protect my own safety be it within a union angle, within a physical intervention process, for my own health and safety with equipment provided and from a safeguarding perspective I have the right to not take on tasks which I feel could put myself at risk from allegation. It is important that I exercise my rights and my professional expectations, always working within the training, policies and legislation provided to me. Having feedback affects my role and practise as a professional worker. Any feedback that I receive should be constructive so that I am able to learn from it and be factual to truly reflect the practise that I show. There are several ways this feedback can be given to me. First of all I receive feedback through supervision with my line manager. This involves a monthly meeting of a minimum of one hour. In this it is my responsibility to bring an agenda and discuss anything I wish to speak about, it is also the responsibility of my supervisor to bring any practise issues and offer of resolution or training to it. Secondly in my role I can receive feedback from my colleagues through meetings, email and 1-2-1 chats. It is important  that this happens to build relationships with your colleagues and produce effective team working. Last of all the most imperative form of constructive feedback is from the young people, they will tell you in the best way they can if you are helping them in the right way through key work sessions, girls meetings and general conversation. It is not good or professional to take this feedback when they are in a heightened state as it will not be a truly reflective account of how they are feeling you are working with them. As a professional we are bound to provide a â€Å"Duty of Care† to myself, my colleagues and the young people I care for. I also have a CALM (Crisis aggression limitation management) instructor certificate which binds me to monitor Duty of care within physical intervention within the unit. What is meant by duty of care is following all rules, boundaries and policies of the unit in the best interest and care of young people and staff. For example, I cannot sit back and watch a young person be assaulted by another and in the same breath cannot watch a staff member get hurt because I don’t want to get involved in a restraint. Not conforming to duty of care is being negligent and this is against the law under Common Law. It states in common law that negligence places people at risk and therefore you are going against risk assessments in place and provided by the unit and its employees to keep everyone safe. It also falls into things such as the Health and Safety Act 2004 where all staff are responsible and have a duty of care to clear up spillages, obstructions and report any damages for them to be dealt with and keep the staff and young people safe.

Greece :: essays research papers

Greece has an area of 50,949 square miles and is located at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The area of Greece is approximately the same as that of England or the U.S. state of Alabama. Greece is located in Southern Europe between Albania and Turkey. The country is bordered to the west by the Ionian Sea, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the east by the Aegean Sea; only to the north and northeast does it have land borders. The basically Mediterranean climate of Greece is subject to a number of regional and local variations occasioned by the country’s physical diversity. The people of Greece usually experience mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. In all seasons, especially in summer, the quality of light is one of Greece’s most appealing attractions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Greek landscape is conspicuous not only for its beauty but also for its complexity and variety. Greece is dominated by three elements: the sea, mountains, and the lowland. Arms and inlets of the sea penetrate deeply so that only a small, wedge-shaped portion of the interior mainland is more than fifty miles from the coast. Islands make up roughly eighteen percent of the territory of modern Greece. Approximately eighty percent of Greece is mountain terrain, much of it deeply dissected. A series of mountain chains on the Greek mainland enclose narrow parallel valleys and numerous small basins that once held lakes. The last dominant feature of the Greek landscape is the lowland. The lowland makes up about twenty percent of the land area and it has played an important role in the life of the country.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Approximately eleven million people live in Greece today. All but a very small part of the population belong to the Church of Greece (Greek Orthodox Church). The Muslim minority, which constitutes most of the non-Orthodox group, is mainly Turkish. Roman and Greek Catholics account for the rest, except for a few thousand adherents of Protestant churches and of Judaism. In terms of ethnic composition, Greeks make up all but a small part of the total, the remainder being composed of Macedonians, Turks, Albanians, Bulgarians, Armenians, and Gypsies. Despite a rapid rate of growth in the post-World War II period, Greece’s economy is one of the least developed in the European Union (EU). Rates of productivity remain low in both the agricultural and industrial sectors, and the development of the country’s economy has lagged behind that of its EU partners. Developments in Latin America and Southeast Asia Essay

Challenges in economy and politics emerged in different part of the world after war against Japan. Development in Southeast Asia and Latin America notably different from others, Standard of living in Latin region significantly much higher than in Southeast Asia (Rozenwurcel qtd. in Grabowski 25). Countries are moving towards Industrialization in different regions, on the other hand protecting local industries against import products through imposition of tariffs and quotas. The inward-oriented development strategy of Latin America brought economic environment which created total productivity that challenge competition, internal and external economic policies, this strategy failed resulted in low productivity of Latin America’s economy. The region of Latin America has abundant land relatively with rich natural resources but a labor-scarce region. Latin American countries decided to shift strategy from inward-oriented to outward-oriented strategy i. e. there is a difficulty in moving towards production of labor-intensive manufacturing goods from production of natural resource-intensive goods (Grabowski 26). Changing strategy has been impossible to attain for Latin America, this would cause extreme devaluation (an official value reduction of a currency) which in fact, devaluation creates inflation in the local economy (Mahon qtd. in Grabowski 26). However Latin America diverge their attention in addressing problems of inequality and population, the capabilities of the region led to their development, this extreme inequality allowed elites to use their power to influence the development of both economic and political institutions, these economic and political rules excluded the continuous population growth and became responsible for wealth and power of the elite (Engerman and Sokoloff qtd. in Grabowski 27). The economy and politics in Latin America strengthened through proper management and enforcement of policies despite of their inability to effective adaptation of outward-oriented strategy. According to Dr. Diouf in his interview about Inequality about development in Latin America, the capable leadership and the necessary political will, the countries of Latin America will be able to rise to the challenges of hunger, malnutrition, inequality and economic problems. World War II paved the way for Asian countries to attain their independence from powerful countries namely United States and Great Britain. In Southeast Asia, development of one country is different from others, but one thing is common that their economic development has been connected with environmental degradation (Iwami 1). Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Burma and Singapore achieved independence from British colony while Philippines from the United States, in fact, the abundant natural resources exploited since before 1945. It is much easier to prepare the path towards industrialization if there is a strong agricultural base; countries with rich agriculture become supplier of raw materials and labor to industrial countries. To accelerate development of idle natural resources, governments in the region have been attracting foreign investments which possess plenty of money, modern technology and expertise in management, the region greatly involved in industrialization as producers of raw products and laborers due to global economic interdependence. Many countries in different regions believe that industrialization is their hope for economic liberation from colonial economy and solution to problems of poverty, hunger and diseases. Industrialization has been bringing opportunities for employment, utilization of agricultural resources and fits to the total economic development program of the country.
